Veg Box News 27th Feb to 2nd March, 2018

You will no doubt be aware of the imminent snowfall forecast for this week.  As ever we will aim to continue our deliveries as usual but apologies in advance if we are unable to get through to you.

We are well into that part of the year that is described by growers as The Hungry Gap – the period after most crops have been harvested and new crops are not yet ready.  So we rely on stored local produce, roots particularly and other crops that tolerate standing in the winter fields, augmented with produce from Europe.  Over the next few weeks we will be turning to Europe for more produce – onions, carrots and new season potatoes will be ready in Spain and Italy before our growers can harvest any home-grown crops.

So here are the lists, with a large Disruption Warning attached:

A

Potatoes – Cara   1.2kg
Carrots 600g
Onions 500g
Bag of Sprouts
Celeriac 800g

D’s will get a further 800g Potatoes and a lettuce

Veg Box News 20th - 23rd February, 2018

Is there a turn in the season?  Not sure yet,but the Chard has certainly been looking delicious this past week and so we're hoping that will continue.

This week also sees Jerusalem Artichokes going into the boxes.  These always get a mixed response from box customers and we usually field a number of phone calls from people wondering a) what they are and b) how do you cook them?

Jerusalem Artichokes are not related to Globe Artichokes at all.  They are the tubers of a type of sunflower and the 'Jerusalem' is simply an abstraction of the Italian name Girasole - (translating roughly as 'turning to the sun'.)
They do take a deal of scrubbing but it is helpful to soak them in cold water for a few minutes before you try.  No need to peel though.
One or two recipe suggestions here...

Veg Box News - 13th - 16th February, 2018

Winter weather continues to limit our choices for the boxes and imports that we are having to use are rather expensive at this time of year.
The weather is also costly for the boxes themselves so if it looks inclement please leave empties out wrapped in a binbag or some other protective layer or under cover.  It only takes one soaking for boxes to become unusable.  Talk to the driver about a good sheltered place for them to leave the delivery.  Some customers put a large plastic lidded box out to accommodate the delivery.  This is greatly appreciated.  They can be purchased quite cheaply from local hard ware or home furnishing retailers.
